Crackdown on litter louts in the village
DRUNKEN youths throwing rubbish in the village pond have been warned their actions could result in fines and public shaming.
Bottles of Lambrini alcohol were spotted floating in the pond besides the ducks near the Village Green on Sunday morning, less than 24 hours after a major clean up had taken place.
As part of a Hillingdon Council campaign which is being launched this week, images captured of anybody spotted on CCTV dropping litter can be published.
Police and council officers are also set to take a harder line with those caught dropping litter and will be enforcing £80 minimum on the spot fines.
Harefield Village Green is a Green Flag Park, meaning it is of the highest environmental quality, and the monthly litter picks are a key contribution to its success.
Michael Dent, of Lovett Road, Harefield, co-ordinated the Tidy Harefield monthly litter pick on Saturday, and was dismayed to find how quick it took for litter to be thrown in the pond.
He said: "I try not to notice these things right after we have done a litter pick, you just have to grin and bear it.
"It can be an uncontrollable situation, particularly when its a fine weekend, more litter get strewn about, while it may not do much damage, it offends the eye."
The team of volunteers trawled around ditches, the green and the pond on Saturday, collecting 10 full black bin bags of litter in the process.
Hillingdon Council asked residents across the borough in a survey of more than 500 for their views on people dropping litter, and 92 per cent said they would support the council and police taking a tougher stance.
In addition to this, 82 per cent of people said they were in favour of the council publishing CCTV images of people caught dropping litter.
Councillor Sandra Jenkins, cabinet member for environment, said: "Dropping litter in the street is unacceptable, and we plan on taking stronger action against it.
"This is something residents have told us they want, and we hope stronger action will mean cleaner streets."
There is also good news for the village in respect to making it cleaner and litter free, Michael Dent- co-ordinator of Tidy Harefield, confirmed the group are looking to set up a separate team in south Harefield, to concentrate on keeping the south of the village pristine.
